Unintended Discipleship

Who or What Is Shaping You?

Scripture Focus: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2

Discipleship in the Everyday

Whether we realize it or not, the world disciplines us daily. From the shows we binge-watch to the conversations we have, the influences around us shape how we think, what we value, and how we act. But here’s the challenge: are these influences disciplining us toward Christ or away from Him?

Let’s look deeper at four major areas where unintended discipleship happens and ask ourselves, are we being shaped by culture or Scripture?

Movies: The Stories We Absorb

“How storytelling impacts our moral compass.”

Movies are powerful tools of influence. They’re not just entertainment; they shape our views of morality, relationships, and priorities. Think about the subtle (and not-so-subtle) messaging in modern films. Whether it’s normalized themes of materialism, sexuality, or even direct shots at Christianity, what we consume often challenges our values.

Uncommen Reflection: What themes dominate the movies you watch? Are they encouraging your faith or diluting it?

Practical Step: Before watching a film, research its content. Use resources like VidAngel to filter harmful elements and ensure your media consumption aligns with your values.

Music: The Lyrics That Linger

“The power of lyrics to reinforce attitudes and beliefs.”

Music is a sneaky disciple. A catchy tune embeds itself into our minds, leaving lyrics influencing our thoughts and speech. Consider the shift in music’s content over the decades—what was once subtle is now explicit. Even Christian music isn’t immune to theological inaccuracies.

Uncommen Reflection: What messages are the songs you love teaching you? Are they leading you closer to God or away from Him?

Practical Step: Commit to a “dry month” by listening only to Christ-centered music. Reflect on how it impacts your mindset and spirit.

TV and News: Normalizing the World’s Values

“Networks would never have allowed today’s TV content 25 years ago”

Reality TV, binge-worthy series, and constant news updates often provide windows into a culture fixated on materialism, self-gratification, and fear. The more we consume these messages, the more they disciple us, normalize sin, and skew our priorities.

Uncommen Reflection: How much time do you spend on TV or news compared to God’s Word? Are your viewing habits building you up or tearing you down?

Practical Step: For one week, replace one hour of TV or news with Bible study or prayer. Pay attention to how this shift impacts your perspective.

Family and Friends: The Voices That Influence

“You become like the people you spend the most time with.”

Our relationships—family, friends, coworkers, and even neighbors—play a massive role in shaping our character. As parents, we discipline our children through our actions. As friends, we are either encouraging or pulling each other down.

Uncommen Reflection: Are your closest relationships helping you grow in your faith? What example are you setting for your family?

Practical Step: Evaluate your circle. Find one way to deepen a Christ-centered relationship this week: joining a small group or inviting a friend to church.

Social Media: The Algorithm That Disciples

“Comparison culture and its impact on self-worth.”

Social media platforms aim to keep you engaged, feeding you content based on your interests. Without intentionality, this can lead to envy, lust, and a distorted sense of reality. Algorithms may seem harmless, but they disciple us by reinforcing the habits and desires we feed.

Uncommen Reflection: How does social media usage affect your faith and mental health? Are you using it to glorify God or seeking validation from others?

Practical Step: Audit your social media habits. Unfollow accounts that don’t align with your values, and follow Christ-centered pages that encourage your walk with God.

Uncommen Questions

  • Which of these areas challenges you the most, and why?
  • What small change can you make today to ensure you’re disciplined by Christ rather than culture?

Uncommen Challenge

Pick one of these areas and commit to reevaluating your habits this week. Replace one worldly influence with prayer, Scripture, or worship time. Take note of the change in your heart and mindset.

Intentional Discipleship: A Call to Action

Discipleship doesn’t happen by accident. The world constantly vies for our attention, shaping us in ways we may not even notice. As believers, we’re called to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). By immersing ourselves in His Word, surrounding ourselves with godly community, and guarding our hearts, we can ensure we are being disciplined intentionally by Christ—not unintentionally by the world.

Good article. I’m especially aware of how social media can easily disciple us in ways that we may not want to go. There is so much negativity out there, it’s so easy to get sucked into. Especially if you go down rabbit holes of reading people’s comments.
